The study looked at the disease course of more than 10,000 corona patients who were hospitalized in sixteen countries. Data from corona patients with and without heart disease were also compared. This shows that the mortality from corona increases with the age of the patient.
According to the researchers, 2 percent of the younger corona patients between the ages of 18 and 25 who are admitted to hospital die. This is almost 42 percent in patients aged 85 and older. Since patients with cardiovascular disease are often older and also have other diseases, the mortality in this group is also higher (30 percent) than in people without cardiovascular disease (15 percent).
The researchers saw no differences in corona complaints between hospital patients with and without heart disease. The complaints did differ per age group. In the 45 to 65-year-old category, fever, cough and shortness of breath are the most common complaints. Younger patients mainly had to deal with a loss of smell.
