Posts shared several thousand times on social networks and on WhatsApp messaging have announced since March 6 the death of Ivorian Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko, said “Hambak“, hospitalized since mid-February in France for serious health problems. This is false, according to corroborating sources, who assure that the head of government was transferred Monday, March 8 to a German hospital. The vagueness remains however on his state of health, while President Alassane Ouattara decided on Monday to appoint a new interim Prime Minister: Patrick Achi.
What is the state of health of Ivorian Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko? The subject, at the center of all conversations in Côte d’Ivoire, has been the subject of multiple questions since March 6 on social networks, where a publication announcing his death was shared several thousand times over the weekend. .
Hamed Bakayoko, dit Hambak, “is dead”, assures the author of this post, activist Chris Yapi. The latter said to hold this “information“of a “diplomatic source“, but admits not having had directly”access to hospital“, or even to the Prime Minister’s companion,”Ms. Yolande Bakayoko “, to do it”confirm or disprove“.
His message nevertheless circulated widely on Ivorian social networks, as well as on WhatsApp messaging (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), eliciting numerous comments from internet users since November 6.
Hamed Bakayoko transferred to Germany
Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko was evacuated on February 18 to France by “special plane“because of major health problems, according to his entourage. Since that date, very little information has filtered out on the reasons for his hospitalization and on his state of health.
This situation has given rise to many rumors, in the midst of the campaign for legislative elections in Côte d’Ivoire. On social networks, Internet users have mentioned a rivalry between the head of government and the entourage of President Alassane Ouattara, who would have sought to dismiss him.
Asked Monday March 8 by AFP, a source close to the presidency however denied the rumor of a death, specifying that Hamed Bakayoko had just been evacuated to a hospital in Germany. “Hamed Bakayoko is doing better this week, he’s still here“a source close to the Prime Minister confirmed to AFP.
According to the German radio and television website German wave, the head of the Ivorian government was reportedly taken care of at the University Hospital Center (CHU) in Friborg on Saturday March 6. There he would undergo treatment for cancer and find himself “in critical condition“, according to the German media.
On Monday, no official communication took place on the subject from the Ivorian authorities. Questioned on Saturday, President Alassane Ouattara was evasive: “given his state of health, he will have to remain in hospital for some time“, he had declared.
An interim prime minister
Hamed Bakayoko, dit “Hambak“succeeded in July 2020 to Amadou Gon Coulibaly, who died following a cardio-respiratory arrest a few days after his return from a long hospitalization in France, as Prime Minister. Also Minister of Defense, he is considered to be a pillar of Alassane Ouattara’s regime.
The rumor of his death comes as the Ivory Coast awaits the results of the legislative elections which were held on Saturday March 6. Hamed Bakayoko, although absent, was himself a candidate in Séguéla, in northeastern Côte d’Ivoire.
Taking note of the prolonged absence of Mr. Bakayoko, the government announced Monday the appointment of Patrick Achi, secretary general of the presidency, as interim prime minister. Téné Birahima Ouattara, Minister of Presidential Affairs and younger brother of President Alassane Ouattara, has been appointed Minister of Defense.
This is not the first time that Chris Yapi, who describes himself on his social networks as a “infiltrator and investigator“, publishes an alarming message on the health of Hamed Bakayoko. At the beginning of February, he was one of the first to announce the deterioration of his state of health, by evoking in turn the trail of cancer and poisoning.
Despite his state of health, the Prime Minister was re-elected as a deputy on Saturday in his stronghold of Séguéla, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI).
