Books “Lily Dzene. The first part of “Investigated Articles” consists of 26 reviews and articles covering the period from 1952 to 2006, while the second part “Nothing Personal” contains excerpts from Lily Dzene’s diary, deciphering the mentioned events, place, time, personalities as much as possible. an index of around one thousand people has also been published). The compiler and scientific editor of the book is theater historian Professor Jānis Siliņš, the diary has been prepared for publication by theater historian Rita Melnace, book artist Gundega Muzikante.
Lilija Dzene (born Mača, 1929–2010), Latvian theater historian, critic and writer, emeritus scientist, Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and Knight of the Order of the Three Stars, born in Vecpiebalga, but already lived in Riga during the high school, father-in-law Dailes in the family of pedagogue Emils Mačs and actresses Lilija Žvīgule, thus approaching the world of theater. She studied journalism in Latvia and at the Faculty of Theater Sciences of the Moscow All-Union Institute of Theater Arts.
Since 1953, he has published more than 400 articles on theater, the monograph “Drama Theater” (1979), created the genre of actors’ monographs in Latvia with books about Mirdzs Šmitheni, Kārlis Sebris, Lidijs Freimanis, Elza Radziņš, Harijs Liepiņš, Alfreds Jaunušana, Jānis Kubils, Eduards Pāvuls, Machu family, Latvian actors in exile, has participated in theater science research and in the encyclopedia “Theater and film biographies”. For almost sixty years, Lilija Dzene’s creative work has been a cornerstone of Latvian theater science.
The author of the book, Professor Jānis Siliņš, has selected 26 articles and reviews that characterize Lilija Dzene’s special ability to analyze theater, actors and directors, to emphasize successes and failures. The first of these is “About Maschanka’s performance at the Academic Drama Theater”, published in Soviet Youth in 1952. The book also includes an article “Vija Artmane – Actress of Daile Theater”, followed by a letter from Vija Artmane; reviews of “Peer Gints” at Daile Theater; Gunārs Priede’s “Thirteenth” and Rainis’ “Golden Horse” Youth Theater; portraits of Dina Kupli, Pēteris Pētersons, Astrīds Kairišs, an overview of JV Goethe’s interpretations of Faust in Latvian theater and others.
At the end of the first part of the book, you can read an essay by Lithian Dzen, a theater scientist and playwright Evita Sniedze, which says: “Writing about Lily Dzene means thinking about the fate that throws a person in a way and time. Not only through the individual, but through the state and the theater. Because time is then named after him. ”
The second part of the book “Nothing Personal” consists of excerpts from Lilija Dzene’s diaries. The part of the diaries that was not destroyed by Dzene herself was donated to the theater scientist Rita Melnace and kept in her archive. The precise observation and judgments of the era allow us to be with not only Lilija Dzene, but also her contemporaries – Vija Artmane, Elza Radziņa, Kārlis Sebris, Alfreds Jaunušans, Lidija Freimans, Dina Kuple, Maija Augstkalns, Pēteris Pētersons, from 1961 to 2007.
The book “Lily Dzene. Investigated Articles ”is published by the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum of the Latvian Academy of Culture and the publishing house“ Mansards ”with the support of the State Cultural Capital Fund and Vecpiebalga municipality, with the participation of Lilija Dzene’s relatives Liene Pētersone and Uldis Mačs.
