Switzerland holds referendum on the legality of the niqab

Switzerland submitted to a referendum the legality of the burqa

The question, put to the referendum, concerns all the ways to hide the face in public places and applies not only to Muslim women.

Switzerland is holding a referendum on the ban on covering the face in public. About it informs Swiss Info Sunday 7 March.

The Swiss are voting on a proposal to impose a nationwide ban on the niqab, burqa, “Palestinian headscarf” and other forms of clothing that allow people to hide their faces in public.

The ban will also apply to football fans, left and right radicals who like to hide their faces during demonstrations.

Proponents of the ban say that men and women should have equal rights, and wearing a veil or niqab limits these rights. It is also believed that banning the wearing of items of clothing that hide the face will enhance security by helping to counteract people who violate public order. The counter-terrorism argument also plays a role.

In turn, opponents of the ban say that the ban on niqab will deprive many Muslim women of the right and the opportunity to leave their homes and participate in public life. After all, the ban will apply to public streets and squares throughout Switzerland, public transport, work offices, restaurants, shops and sports arenas. Exceptions for female tourists, such as those from the Gulf States, are not permitted.

Finally, the parliamentary majority, which rejects the ban, has prepared its counter-proposal, in the center of which is the ban on hiding the face only if the authorities want to carry out personal identification of the person. The document also provides for a package of measures to promote gender equality and improve the process of social integration in Switzerland of Muslim women, primarily from among migrants.

As a reminder, in 2019 the Netherlands banned the wearing of the burqa… The Netherlands has introduced a ban on wearing items of clothing that cover the face. The list includes the burqa, motorcycle helmets and balaclavas.

Also in 2018 a law banning the wearing of the burqa came into force in Denmark… The document, in addition to the burqa and niqab, prohibits wearing balaclavas, masks, false beards and mustaches in public places.
