Herringbone wins the 45th place in the dusty “Strade Bianche” competition

In the competition, which turns 15 this year, athletes measured a distance of 184 kilometers, in which 63 kilometers had to be covered on gravel. Cyclists had to cover the last kilometers on the narrow streets of Siena.

The fastest to reach the finish line was the Dutchman Matecie van der Pool (“Alpecin-Fenix”), who was five seconds ahead of his closest follower, Gillen Alafilipp, from France. Third place was won by Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal (“Ineos Grenadiers”) 20 seconds behind.

From the “Trek-Segafredo” team, the best result was achieved by the Dutchman Bauke Molema, who lost six minutes and 26 seconds to the leader, ranking 21st.

Herringbone was seven minutes and four seconds behind the winner, reaching the finish in a small group. He ranked 48th.

69 kilometers before the finish, Slovenian Tadej Pogachar (UAE) was one of three athletes who experienced a fall, but he was able to return to the competition. When there were less than 50 kilometers left in the distance, Skujiņš teammate Quins Simons from the USA was driving in front of the group, but 40 kilometers to the finish he had a flat tire.

Simon did not fail because he fell 20 kilometers later. Meanwhile, a small group had taken the lead, which also included the winners van der Pul and Pogachar. 700 meters to the finish, the Dutchman overtook Bernal and Alafilip, celebrating his 29th career victory.

In 2019, Skujiņš won the high ninth place in this competition. Last year, neither Skujiņš nor Krists Neilands reached the finish line in the “Strade Bianche” competition.

Christ Neiland, a member of the Israel Start-Up Nation team, will start on the Paris-Nice bike ride on Sunday.
