Wien. Since today there has been an unpleasant smell over Vienna. Numerous Viennese asked themselves: “What stinks like that here?”. Some guessed it was fertilizer and others saw a garbage truck driving by nearby, others thought they had something on their shoes. Many on social media were also amazed at the smell:

Then some Twitter users dissolve: “All around the fields are being fertilized again. With unfavorable winds it smells like in a cesspool in Vienna,” it says in a comment. In response to an oe24 request, ZAMG confirms: “This happens every now and then when the fields are being fertilized. The wind carries the smell into the urban area,” explains press spokesman Wostal. There are agricultural regions around the federal capital such as Marchfeld in the east.
In spring, when fertilization is applied, the wind carries the fertilizer smell into the urban area. With the weather change on Friday, the stench should subside, says Wostal. Rain would take the smell out of the air.
