Oberstdorf (dpa) – Actually, Jörn Verleger has enough to do. As managing director of the Grünwalder theme park near Munich and as president of the world fistball association, for example.
That didn’t stop the 48-year-old from applying as a volunteer at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf. Verleger was selected as one of around 1,400 so-called volunteers. “A lot of my annual vacation is spent on sports and sporting events,” he says. He was already at the World Cup in Allgäu in 2005.
“It doesn’t really depend on the sport. The main motto is: Better to be in the middle of it instead of just being there, ”is how Verleger explains his passion. The list of sporting events he has attended in any capacity is long. An excerpt: Volunteer at the football World Cup 2006, hall speaker at table tennis and ice hockey, organizer at the Chess Olympiad in Dresden 2008. “I live sport. That gives me something, ”he says in Oberstdorf. “To see such an award ceremony here: I also draw energy out of it.”
