Creation of the organization in 2016
The French Insurance Federation (FFA) gather it French Federation of Insurance Companies (FFSA) and the Group of mutual insurance companies (GEMA) within a single organization since 2016.
FFSA In 1937, the FFSA insurance was born in the form of a professional union. Its purpose was to represent the interests of insurance companies and federate technical groups from different branches.
It included:
- public limited companies;
- mutual insurance companies;
- and international branches offering insurance and reinsurance products.
EGG YOLK It was in 1964 that the GEMA is created. It is made up of 5 French mutuals: GMF, MAAF, MAIF, Macif, Matmut. Its vocation is to represent French mutuals to public authorities, local elected officials, and economic and social partners.
Today, the FFA brings together nearly 280 insurance and reinsurance companies which operate in France, i.e. more than 99% of the market.
The main missions of the FFA assurance
Among the main missions of the French Insurance Federation, we find :
- information to the public and the media;
- promotion of preventive actions;
- preservation of the entire economic and social field in relation to insurance activities;
- represent insurance with national and international public authorities, institutions and administrative or local authorities;
- provide a forum for consultation and analysis of financial, technical or legal issues;
- provide essential statistical data on the profession and the market;
- promote the place of insurance in the academic world and in training.

???? The activities of the FFA
The French Insurance Federation carries out several activities. There are mainly four of them.
Lobbying activity with the National Assembly
The French Federation of Insurance Companies (FFSA) historically registered as a representative ofinterests of its members in the French National Assembly and policy makers. In 2015, the Federation declared a total budget of 32 million euros of which 300,000 euros are linked to this representation activity with public authorities. Public funding is included in this budget, up to 32 000 euros.
Lobbying activity with the institutions of the European Union
The FFSA was registered in 2009 in the transparency register of interest representatives to the European Commission. This mission, managed by several collaborators, aims to represent the Federation’s own interests but also those of its adherent members with regard to European policies. In 2015, the budget allocated to this lobbying mission amounted to 900 000 euros.
A societal role with CORA
In 2008, the Insurance Orientation and Reflection Council (CORA) was launched by Bernard Spitz (President of the FFSA until 2016). The launch of CORA reflects the desire of insurance companies and mutuals to assume their societal role in public debates. Its vocation is toincrease exchanges between insurance players in France and civil society.

University research with the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne
In 2016, a university research program called “Insurance and society: Historicity of knowledge and practice of interdisciplinarity“. This program was set up by the partnership agreement between the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the French Insurance Federation.
GOAL The objective is to analyze the long-term evolution of insurance during crises and societal changes in France and abroad.
The multi-year research program concluded between the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the FFA positions insurance at the heart of major academic debates and will shed new light on the place of this industry in society. ???? The organization of the French Insurance Federation (FFA)
Concerning I’organization of the FFA insurance, she is made of two main bodies, the decision-making body and the consultation body. It is also composed of a General Assembly, an Executive Council, a Presidency Committee, an Insurance Council and twelve standing committees.
