Planned events such as outdoor fitness in groups cannot currently take place, so the first month will now be dedicated to “everyday sport” – that is, you should make more trips by bike or on foot – more on this in Graz Sports Year 2021 starts with appeal 2021 should be the sporting year for everyone in Graz (October 7th, 2020) and in the sporting year 2021: Step Challenge via app (February 4th, 2021).
Everyone in Graz should go to the Schlossberg
Sports Councilor Kurt Hohensinner (ÖVP) set a good example on Wednesday together with program coordinator Markus Pichler and the main sponsors and climbed the 260 steps to the clock tower on foot from Schloßbergplatz. At the starting point, anyone who wants to do the same can now take a ticket with a QR code and use it to take their souvenir photo on the Schloßberg at a photo point in front of the clock tower. The aim is for 300,000 people to take part in the course of the year – that’s roughly the size of the city’s population.
Pass and prices for seven peaks
In addition, sports programs have been started for school classes and the “Seven Summits of Graz” launched: All seven “summits” – Schloßberg, Lustbühel, Fürstenstand, St. Johann and Paul, the Platte, Buchkogel and the Schöckl – are to be hiked or taken with the Wheel to be conquered. According to Pichler, a collective pass is stamped on every summit, “as it used to be”. Once the pass is full, it can be sent in and there are prizes to be won. For extreme athletes, the challenge is to manage all seven peaks in one day.
Against aging
Pichler emphasized the idea of the sports year: “We don’t do this for a few nice events, we have to react to the aging of society, move more and activate people so that they get old healthy.”
Mayor Siegfried Nagl (ÖVP), who was only able to send a video message because of a CoV infection – more on this in Graz Mayor infected with CoV (February 24, 2021) – emphasized: “We have all had enough of the pandemic, we need more exercise . “Sports councilor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) hopes for many imitators and can certainly imagine a competition:” For example Kapfenberg against Bruck. “
