Covid: engineering lost 11% of its turnover in 2020

Stop of construction sites, closure of industrial sites, drop in orders and calls for tenders … The engineering sector was hit by the health crisis in 2020, but in smaller proportions than some of its customers. According to a study by their professional federation, Syntec-Ingénierie, which has 400 members, overall turnover fell 11% to 42.3 billion euros. The restart will be slow and the return to normal will not take place before 2022, with an expectation of further decline of 8% this year and 1% next year.

Engineering brings together 73,000 companies in France. They provide high added value intellectual services to their public and private clients, from the design of buildings and structures, to the optimization of industrial chains, through the contribution to R & D, digital innovation, advice on adapting to climate change… The drop in activity can therefore be explained by the stoppage of projects during containment and the collapse of order intake.
