Beware of this disease that runs and that is not the coronavirus

If the pandemic situation in which we live has any merit, it is that of having reduced the onset of some ailments typical of the winter months such as coughs, colds and flu. This is due to the drastic reduction in the chances of contagion, due to the restrictions and social confinement of the pandemic.

The same is not true for other pathologies, which do not know a reduction in the possibility of infections, but which continue to run. Today we will devote attention to this disease that turns and that is not the coronavirus.

A parasitic worm to fear

The fearsome disease we are talking about today is caused by a parasite, specifically a verme nematode which lives in fish meat. We are talking about the infamous Anisakis, which in humans can cause allergic reactions to the products released by worms in parasitized fish, or parasitosis caused by the ingestion of infected raw fish.

The worm usually lives in the meats of salmon, swordfish, tuna, anchovies, cod, mackerel and monkfish. If you ingest infected fish we can have very severe abdominal pain along with nausea and vomiting and in some cases high fever. Sometimes the larvae can even be expelled and visible to the naked eye.

If we suspect that we have Anisakis intoxication we must immediately intervene by contacting a hospital.

The good news is that we can prevent Anisakis by cooking the fish or killing it. If we want to consume raw fish this must necessarily have been killed. No other method, neither smoking nor salting are effective in killing the parasite that may be present.

Against Anisakis and all food poisoning we must not let our guard down. If we rightly do not want to give up a good sushi or a fish carpaccio, we must absolutely follow this advice and consume raw fish that has been previously killed. Freezing alone does not eliminate the parasite.

We don’t want to create false alarms, but the risk of ingesting this worm is always lurking. Every year hundreds of people feel bad about the parasite, too many, if we think about how easy it is to prevent it.
