Last month, on Wednesday February 3, FENACORE organized a digital meeting to present the book “Positive Externalities of Irrigation”, which had the participation of Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
After the intervention of Andrés del Campo, president of Fenacore to welcome the audience, and the presentation Julio Berbel, Professor at the University of Córdoba and coordinator of the book, lthe day featured some of the authors of the book, who described the main contributions of irrigation at a socioeconomic and environmental level.
Despite the current challenges posed by climate change, the sector has resources. And, is that, thanks to the modernization of irrigation systems, in the last decade savings of close to 16% have been achieved in water consumption. In this way, Manuel Omedas, former head of the Planning Office of the Ebro Confederation and author of the chapter “Irrigation and the water-energy binomial in the energy transition”, addressed the possibility of saving water and reducing energy consumption at the same time: “Irrigators, with their productions, are not predators of the environment, rather they contribute to the food and energy sustainability of Spain ”. Moreover, “water, together with irrigation, are a fundamental actor in the energy transition,” he stressed.
