On the 3rd, Seoul City announced that it had searched the home of former Shin Dong-A Group Chairman Choi Soon-young, who is delinquent of tax of 3.89 billion won, and seized the assets in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, on the 3rd of’Taxpayer’s Day’.
According to the city, the former chairman Choi is delinquent in paying a residence tax of 6170 won and a tax of 3.89 billion won. On that day, the Seoul Metropolitan Government invested two groups of investigators to search the house, and found and seized 20 movable property, including 2,678,000 won in cash and artworks.
In particular, it was discovered that the family of former chairman Choi sold an expensive painting for 3.5 billion won in April 2020 in the name of his wife, Hyung-ja Lee, and searched for the use of the sale price to find an account. Mr. Lee said, “3.5 billion won for the sale of the painting is the school expenses for six grandchildren and six granddaughters,” the city said.
Chairman Choi’s family leases three luxury cars under the name of the A Foundation, and is being used by delinquents and their families. It was found that the house where each of the two sons lives is also being used for free.
The city plans to review the cancellation and prosecution against the foundation in accordance with the Act on the Establishment and Operation of Public Interest Corporations.
An official from the 38 Tax Collection Division said, “It is a measure to withdraw from high unscrupulous and delinquent people who do not pay even 6,170 won in residence tax, which the common people also pay all the time while living in an extravagant life.”
