A four-week “running challenge” starts at the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Rheinfeld. Together they want to cover 6241.51 kilometers. What’s it all about? An interview.
Under the motto “The GBG is going to New York!” the Rheinfelder Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium (GBG) started a four-week running challenge this Monday, in which 6241.51 kilometers are covered together. Teacher Christian Schloz, who initiated the idea, explains what it is all about.
BZ: How did the idea of the running challenge come about?
Schloz: The basic idea was to provide a sporting challenge for everyone involved in the school life of the GBG. Especially in the current situation, in which a lot of time is spent in front of the screen as part of homeschooling, compensation through movement is often neglected. As a sports department at the GBG, we successfully implemented the principle of a running challenge in the first lockdown on a smaller scale. In the search for a school-wide project, the brilliant idea arose in an exchange with another school.
“The focus should be on the community and not the competition.”
BZ: How exactly will the running challenge run in March?
Schloz: Our common goal is to cover the route from Rheinfelden to New York within four weeks. That is a little more than 6240 kilometers. That’s why we want to get everyone on board: schoolchildren, parents and the staff. The kilometers run by each individual kilometer are uploaded and added up via our school platform. Once a week there will be an updated status so that everyone can see the progress. There you can also see the progress of individual class groups, for example one group would be the fifth and sixth graders. This can also motivate you to collect more kilometers. In the foreground, however, should be the community and not the competitive idea.
Christian Schloz has been teaching sports, social studies and economics at the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium for five years. He doesn’t want to reveal his age because schoolchildren want to bet him about his age again and again – and he doesn’t want to spoil his chances of getting one or the other cake.
BZ: Why is such an action needed right now?
Schloz: Exercise and fresh air are good for a strong immune system. Especially during the current lockdown with all its limitations and psychological stress, it is important to create a balance. Due to the prohibition of contact and the suspended classroom teaching, our students miss out on encounters with one another. We hope to strengthen our sense of togetherness at the GBG when everyone faces this challenge together and reaches the Statue of Liberty in four weeks. I am very optimistic that we can do it.
