2.4 million people over 70 may vote in elections | NOW

More than 2.4 million people over 70 will be allowed to vote by mail in the coming elections to the House of Representatives, it appears on Monday calculations of Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In total, an estimated 13.2 million people will be able to vote in the elections on March 17.

This year, people over 70 are allowed to vote by mail in connection with the corona virus. More than 18 percent of the 13.2 million voters are 70 years or older, calculated by Statistics Netherlands, and are therefore allowed to vote by post.

Anyone who is of Dutch nationality and is 18 years or older on election day may vote during the elections. Statistics Netherlands has not included Dutch people living abroad in its estimates.

About 810 thousand young people are allowed to vote for the first time this year. Statistics Netherlands calculated that since the previous elections, which took place in March 2017, 883 thousand young people have turned eighteen. 73,000 of them do not have a Dutch nationality and are therefore not entitled to vote.
