Filmmaker Spike Lee is preparing a documentary series on how New York recovered from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and also from the coronavirus pandemic, the HBO channel of the WarnerMedia group announced on Monday.

The series will air “later this year” on HBO and the streaming platform HBO Max to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Al Qaida attacks.

“I am proud” to be able to tell “how my city found itself at the epicenter of September 11 and covid-19,” said the famous New York director, quoted in the statement.

“With more than 200 interviews, we delved into what makes New York the most formidable city in the world, and the diversity of its inhabitants that contributes to it. For centuries, observers and hate-filled people have proclaimed, wrongly, that New York was dead and stank, “added the filmmaker, who has received Oscars for” Do The Right Thing “(Do the Right Thing, 1990) and more recently,” BlacKkKlansman “(The KKKlan Infiltrator, 2018).

Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham, co-makers of documentaries at HBO, welcomed this new collaboration with the 63-year-old director, who had already worked with HBO for a documentary series on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

“We value Spike Lee’s ability to recount these historic events, paying tribute to the victims while witnessing to the strength and resilience of the human being,” they stated.
