Nicolas Sarkozy will know today if he becomes the second president of the V e Republic to be condemned by the justice of his country. Will the accursed son of Chiraquism walk in the footsteps of this political father from whom he has nevertheless never ceased to deviate? Ten years ago, it was a Chirac already weakened and absent from his trial who had been sentenced to two years in prison for embezzlement of public funds, breach of trust and illegal taking of interest. At the time, during the Sarkozy quinquennium, the prosecution had requested the release. Last November, it was four years in prison, two of which were suspended which were required against Nicolas Sarkozy, for corruption and influence peddling.
The judgment of the day is the first in a series that threatens to lengthen for the former mayor of Neuilly. From March 17 until April 15, Nicolas Sarkozy will again face judges. This time it will be a question of exceeding the spending limit of his presidential campaign lost in 2012. As for the financing of that, victorious, of 2007, it is still worth to the former president to be indicted for passive corruption, illegal financing campaign, concealment of Libyan public funds and criminal association. Just that. If we add to this the recent revelation of an investigation opened by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office for influence peddling and laundering of felony or misdemeanor, we understand that the future of the former president should be limited to this judicial horizon.
However, in the eyes of many right-wing elected officials, in the hearts of thousands of LR activists, Nicolas Sarkozy remains a “beacon”. Torn between a center right which likes to walk, and a hard right wing which dreams of authoritarian candidacies, it appears as a unifying remedy. This says as much about the health of the right as it does about the man’s rebounding abilities.
