TEBET, AYOBOGOR.COM – Covid-19 can cause different symptoms for each sufferer. In some cases, Covid-19 has no symptoms or only mild symptoms. This makes some people maybe unaware that they have been exposed to Covid-19.
The chief health advisor to the US President, Dr Anthony Fauci, also highlighted the acute sequelae of post-Covid-19 (PASC). Dr Fauci said after the body is clean from the virus, new symptoms may appear and last long enough, up to a matter of months. These sequelae can range from mild symptoms to moderately aggravating symptoms.
There are at least nine symptoms that may indicate that a person has been exposed to Covid-19 and is in the PASC phase. The following are the nine symptoms, as reported Eat This, Sunday (28/2/2021).
Fatigue
Dr Fauci said one of the symptoms that may occur in the PASC phase is extreme fatigue. Study published by the University of Washington in JAMA shows that more than 30 percent of people with PASC have this fatigue symptom.
Loss of Sense of Taste or Smell
Another symptom that people with PASC also commonly experience is loss of their sense of smell or taste. It is not really known why these symptoms can occur in cases of Covid-19. Some suggest that this condition may be due to SARS-CoV-2 causing direct damage to nerves olfactory or because there is inflammation and nasal obstruction.
Hard to breathe
Even mild Covid-19 can cause damage to the lungs. This damage can lead to long-lasting shortness of breath. This symptom is estimated to occur in around 25-35 percent or even more in people who experience Covid-19 sequelae.
Sleep Disorders
Insomnia, vivid dreams, nightmares, and restless leg syndrome can be post-Covid-19 sequelae. This may occur because SARS-CoV-2 affects the body’s nervous system, thereby disrupting sleep quality.
Fever or Fluctuation in Body Temperature
Fluctuating body temperature can also occur in people with PASC. This condition occurs because the body may still be trying to fight the infection consistently, even though the virus that causes Covid-19 is actually no longer present in the body.
Digestive Symptoms
Other symptoms that may occur in PASC cases are vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. To avoid or relieve these symptoms, doctors recommend that people adopt a healthy diet.
Anxiety or Depression
Anxiety or depression also may occur in people with PASC. This condition can even be experienced by people who experience mild symptoms of Covid-19.
Brain Fog
Brain fog is a condition in which a person has difficulty concentrating and focusing. These symptoms may be felt in people who experience the sequelae of Covid-19, especially in the older age group.
Pathologists from Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that large bone marrow cells known as megacaryocytes are responsible for this brain fog. Pathologists believe that these megakaryocytes migrate to the brain because they are triggered by the destructive activity of SARS-CoV-2.
Variety of Symptoms
Covid-19 patients report up to 98 different symptoms. Dr Fauci said that currently experts of various expertise are looking to find out more about this diversity of symptoms.
If you are suspicious of having PASC
PASC can happen to anyone, even people who are young and healthy. If you experience these PASC-related symptoms, you should immediately contact a health professional.
