The British research team “Prevents 80% of the elderly from getting worse”
Korea discusses vaccination plans for the elderly soon
Expert “I need to get the vaccination time ahead”

The situation in countries surrounding the UK AstraZeneca vaccine’s permitting vaccination for the elderly over the age of 65 is changing rapidly. In Korea, discussions on how to immunize the elderly with AstraZeneca vaccine is expected to begin sooner or later.

Canada decided on the 26th of last month (local time) to get the AstraZeneca novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine for all adults. Canadian health officials approved the AstraZeneca vaccine on the condition that they are ’18 years of age or older’. There was no limit on the upper age limit.

The atmosphere in France is also changing. French President Emmanuel Macron said on the 25th of last month, “According to recent scientific studies, the efficacy of the AstraZeneca vaccine has been proven. If it was my turn and the AstraZeneca vaccine was provided, I would be happy to be right.” Previously, President Macron had questioned the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine inoculating elderly people. Germany, which allowed vaccinations for 18-64 year olds, is expected to allow vaccinations for the elderly sooner or later.

This change is attributed to an ongoing study by a research team at the University of Edinburgh in the UK on vaccinators in Scotland. According to an interim presentation by the research team, the AstraZeneca vaccine was found to have an effect of preventing severe illness in the elderly by 80%. The final study results are expected to be released in the middle of this month. The Korean government, which also withheld vaccination for the elderly, is also paying attention to the case of Scotland. As soon as the final results of the study are released, the government plans to discuss whether or not to immunize the elderly with AstraZeneca at the Vaccination Committee. The initial plan of waiting for the announcement of the results of the US clinical trial at the end of March was advanced. Experts also say that the AstraZeneca vaccine should be vaccinated as soon as possible for the elderly. Choi Won-seok, a professor of infectious medicine at Korea University Ansan Hospital, said, “If the results of other studies proving the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine are sufficient, there is no need to delay the decision to immunize the elderly.” Kim Mo-ran, chairman of the Corona 19 Countermeasures Committee of the Korean Society for Preventive Medicine, said, “We have completed the investigation of vaccination intentions for residents and workers in nursing hospitals and facilities 65 years of age or older.”
