5. Referees and victimhood
Finally, oh no: nothing happened in Genoa. Bergamo – after the victory over Napoli and Stieler’s crimes with Real – spent seven days struggling with a mix of conspiracy and victimization frankly excessive. With Napoli – we remember – a penalty was denied in a match that ended 4-2 for the Nerazzurri. Where there is a conspiracy, games are generally lost, not won. When in Italian football there were plots for real who had to lose lost and who had to win won. Few stories, the exceptions were not covered. Then there was Real Madrid, Freuler’s dismissal and a series of other referee slips. Mistakes of a referee in a decidedly wrong evening, probably frightened by the idea that the little Atalanta could impose a fool on Real Madrid. These are the facts, without discounts or exaggerations. But all this has generated exactly what Bergamo has always rejected: victimhood. Which is precisely what Bergamo has always charged others with as a bad attitude. The “cry on oneself” intended as a technique to then perhaps collect something in the future. A sinister, unsportsmanlike technique, which implies plots and bad faith without obviously being able to prove them with proven evidence, if not with ridiculous scrambling on mirrors, hypothetical accounts in hand. Result: Genoa was expected with binoculars in hand, ready to find the smoking gun of the conspiracy in any conflict deemed foul. Instead: Sampdoria-Atalanta 0-2 and the referee who, regardless of his identity card, did nothing wrong. In short, let us leave the tears to those who have no other arguments than the moldy scripts of arbitration wrongs. Atalanta has become great on the pitch, without anyone’s favor and without beating conspiracies and ghosts. He is in the final of the Italian Cup, in the round of 16 of the Champions League and third, as we write, in the league. Everything else is part of a mentality that, if practiced, risks putting the Bergamo environment on the same level as those that have always been detested here. We are not like that. Maybe let’s prove it.
