Washington
The move to “capture or kill” Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was made with the knowledge of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to a U.S. intelligence report. Khashoggi was a fierce critic of the policies of Mohammed bin Salman. He left Saudi Arabia and settled in the United States, working for the Washington Post. Killed on October 2, 2018 at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.
Khashogi’s body was mutilated. Many parts could not be found. The Saudis, who later claimed that Khashoggi had been accidentally killed during a search with other motives, argued that Mohammed bin Salman had nothing to do with it.
However, the National Director of Intelligence said in a report to the US Congress that such a move was not possible without the knowledge of the Crown Prince. One of Mohammed bin Salman’s advisers and some members of the security forces were directly involved in the abduction of Khashoggi from the consulate. Since 2017, Saudi intelligence has been in complete control of Mohammed bin Salman. The report also says that it is the nature of the crown prince to silence dissent. The Saudi Foreign Ministry responded by dismissing the report.
Prior to the release of the intelligence report, US President Joe Biden called King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.
