The New Jersey Devils lost 2-5 to the Washington Capitals.
New Jersey improved after a weak initial phase, but in the end the 3-0 deficit could not be corrected after 14 minutes. Washington took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a double strike by Garnet Hathaway (4th) and Daniel Sprong (6th). In the following minutes, New Jersey came up with some chances, goalie Vanecek vetoed. In the 14th minute, a puck loss by Will Butcher in the offensive zone led to a three-on-one counterattack for the guests, which Lars Eller converted to 3-0. In the 19th minute New Jersey came out on top and after PK Subban’s long-range shot Nico Hischier was right and reduced the score to 1: 3.
In the middle third, New Jersey took the momentum with them and in the 27th minute it was Pavel Zacha who shortened to 2: 3 after the pass from Nico Hischier, Vanecek had recently lost his stick.
In the final third, New Jersey dominated over long stretches and in the 42nd minute Zacha had the equalizer on the stick after a wonderful combination Hischier-Bratt, Vanecek held the lead for Washington. In the 52nd minute, a break from Carlsson landed exactly on the stick of Jakub Vrana, who was faster than Nico Hischier, and with Washington’s first chance to score in the final third, he increased to 2: 4. In the 56th minute, New Jersey briefly outnumbered Nico Hischier when he was hit in the face by a deflected shot from PK Subban. Nick Dowd scored in the 60th minute to 2: 5 into the empty goal.
Nico Hischier won 13 of 24 face-offs, received 18:02 ice time, blocked a shot, shot twice on goal and ended the game with a neutral record.
Jonas Siegenthaler was again redundant at Washington.
