Imagination of a Persistence Mission on Mars (Provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech) 2020.07.29 /News 1 |
The moment the American Mars probe’Personality’ landed on Mars on the 19th (Korean time), space lovers from all over the world cheered.
Even after the live broadcast of the landing on Mars, the NASA, which led the project, has been releasing photos and videos taken on Mars in order to continue interest in and outside the United States.
NASA is holding various experiential events in order to reach out to people who regard space as a business of others.
If you would like to try out the various experiences listed below, you can easily access NASA’s event page by searching in English written in the article.
A page where you can request a name to be launched on the Mars probe of the US Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2026. Enter your first name in’FIRST NAME’ and your last name in’LAST NAME’, select’SOUTH KOREA’ in COUNTRY, and enter your international zip code in POSTAL CODE. Submissions can be made with the SEND button at the bottom (Captured the NASA website) 2021.02.26 /News1 |
◇ 1.39 million’names’ who went to Mars… Recruiting names to go to Mars in 2026
The representative event is’Send your name to Mars’. The name-sending event also took place in 2011 when the Mars probe Curiosity was launched.
If you apply from the website, NASA will engrave your name on a small chip with an electron beam and send it to the Mars probe. Although virtual for applicants, boarding passes for Mars are also issued.
10,392,295 names were listed in this Perseverance issue. Of these, the number of Korean applicants was 20,3814.
The opportunity to name the Perseverance has gone, but the NASA website is looking for a name for the Mars rover to be launched in 2026.
As of the 26th, about 8.29 million people have applied, and about 150,000 names are expected to arrive on Mars in Korea.
After pressing the blue’Upload Image’ button, upload a photo file, select a background, and use the’Download’ menu. (Capture the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) website) 2021.02.26 /News 1 |
◇ Pretend to take a selfie on Mars?… We will automatically synthesize
“I can’t send you to Mars (yet!), but I bring you a red planet”
This is the introduction of Mars Perseverance Photo Booth.
It is a service that automatically identifies the part of the person in the photo when a photo is uploaded, and combines the Mars photos sent by the Perseverance or the Mars probe into photos in the control room.
If you record the sound while holding down the microphone button in the’YOU ON MARS’ menu, you can see how the same sound is automatically heard in the atmosphere of Mars. |
◇How will my voice change on Mars?
Mars’ atmospheric density is very sparse, about 1% of Earth’s atmosphere. Also, unlike Earth, which is mainly made up of nitrogen and oxygen, most of Mars’ atmosphere is carbon dioxide. In addition, the average temperature on Mars’ surface is -63℃, which is very cold compared to Earth.
Because of these characteristics of Mars, it makes a different sound than Earth. The sound spreads more slowly due to the influence of temperature, and sounds smaller because of the density. In addition, high-pitched sounds are absorbed into the air due to the influence of carbon dioxide, which occupies most of Mars’ atmosphere.
In Sounds of Mars, you can experience the different sounds in Mars’ atmosphere. If you record up to 10 seconds of sound, it changes to the sound you hear in the atmosphere of Mars.
In this menu, you can also hear the sound of wind recorded on Mars.
In addition, NASA provides △ Mars rover driving game △ Mars educational material △ Mars landing programming experience.
Various contents are being developed and released to make the space exploration project not only as a festival for science and technology enthusiasts, but as an opportunity for society to enjoy together and instill dreams for the next generation. The United Arab Emirates, which sent a probe to Mars at the same time as the United States, also launched a major project to gain educational effects.
Korea also launched Arirang 2 in 2006 with the names of 120,000 people. It was found that there was no planned event such as’Send Name’ because the purpose of the’Nuri’ launched in October is to develop the projectile itself. Instead, it can be expected from the lunar exploration project. Korean lunar exploration plans are underway to launch a probe in 2022 and a lander in 2030.
