In a violent prison break in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday, 400 detainees escaped and 25 people were killed. The fatalities include a cop and six detainees, local authorities announced Friday.
The rest of the victims are civilians who were attacked in the escape.
The national police has now managed to arrest 60 detainees from the Croix-des-Bouquets prison. Prison control is back in the hands of the authorities, Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe reported.
One of the escapees was Arnel Joseph, a powerful gang leader in Haiti. He was shot dead by police on Friday as he drove through a checkpoint. Before his arrest in 2019, he was the Caribbean island’s most wanted gang leader.
