Facebook immediately signed contracts with Australian media companies following the introduction of a controversial media law. The world’s largest social network announced the agreements with Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media on Friday.

“After these agreements, there will now be a range of premium journalism content, including previously paid content, on Facebook,” it said. The Australian parliament passed a law the day before that obliges online platforms to share their advertising revenues generated with news with media houses. Facebook had resisted the law.

Australia is the first nation to pass such a law. For years, however, governments around the world have been looking for ways to curb the influence of US technology giants. Several states have now declared that they will take steps following the example of Australia.
