Youth talks about mental health in documentary series

Nicolas Chassé, a bipolar resident of Tétreaultville, participated in the webseries Perfectly imperfect dedicated to mental health, which will be broadcast from March 2 on ICI TOU.TV

The documentary series is co-produced by Jean-Simon Chartier and Charles Menher of MC2 Communication Média and includes 20 episodes of approximately 10 minutes. The goal, according to Mr. Chartier, is to destigmatize psychological distress and mental health disorders in young people, to talk about it in a positive way and that there are solutions, without denying the fact. that they affect one in five young people in Quebec.

“The aim is to show that these young people who are suffering are normal and that some of their weaknesses become strengths. So the series takes a positive and dynamic look in a language that speaks to young people, ”summarizes the co-producer.

Mental health: breaking down taboos

By deciding to participate in the webseries, Nicolas Chassé wanted to deconstruct the taboos related to mental health. At 18, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

“It manifests itself with periods when I’m depressed, or sometimes I have manic phases where I have lots of projects. When I am in my depressive phase, I am very depressed and my generalized anxiety disorder lasts every day ”, reports to Subway the resident of Mercier-Est. He says he is stressed in front of events which are not likely to generate stress.

His manic phases make him make decisions he wouldn’t have made

“I had projects like when I was 16, I moved to Rimouski overnight, alone with my luggage. Because of my bipolar thing, I moved away without my parents without thinking about the consequences, ”he says.

Public figures

In the series, each young person is paired with a public figure who has the same disorder as them. It features celebrities such as Marie-Mai, Marie-Soleil Dion, Antoine Desrochers, Mélissa Bédard, Simon Boulerice and PA Méthot. Mr. Chassé is associated with the comedian PA Méthot, also suffering from bipolarity.

“We are not the same age, he has a lot more development, experience in the face of his bipolarity. It’s interesting to see what he had to say about his bipolarity and how he experienced it, ”said Nicolas Chassé. He pointed out that they understood each other very well and had long discussions outside of the shoot. “The series met my expectations 100 percent. It’s a great production team, super open people, bright and very pleasant to be around ”, he said.

According to statistics, Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest among industrialized countries. 50% of mental illnesses start before the age of 14 and 75% before the age of 22. Hyper-anxiety, which affects 25% of girls aged 12 to 14, eating disorders and self-harm affecting 10 to 20% of young Canadians remain the most common disorders.
