The economic consequences linked to the coronavirus epidemic, such as the absence of ticket sales, weigh on the finances of Juventus Turin. In his last financial report, the Italian champion figures the amount of his losses.
Even the biggest clubs are affected by the economic consequences linked to the coronavirus epidemic. This is particularly the case of Juventus Turin. Last season, in the first half, the Italian champion suffered a loss of 50.3 million euros. For 2020-2021, over the first half, he has already lost 113.7 million euros.
“During the first semester of fiscal year 2020/2021, the continuation of the pandemic generated a significant negative impact on revenues (mainly from competitions and products), which can be estimated at around 50 million euros”, Juventus reported on Thursday in a statement, stating that its debt totaled 357.8 million as of December 31, 2020.
Juve remained active in the transfer window
Like its competitors, the Agnelli family club has been confronted for several months with the absence of ticket sales since Serie A is being played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus. His disappointing journey last season in the Champions League, with an elimination in the round of 16 against OL, did not help bail out the funds either, which must assume large salaries, in particular that of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.
That hasn’t stopped Juve from carrying out some operations last summer in the transfer market. The promising American midfielder Weston McKennie, for example, arrived from Schalke in the form of a one-season loan for an amount of 4.5 million euros, accompanied by a purchase obligation valued at 18.5 million euros if the player achieves certain goals.
Arthur left FC Barcelona to join the Old Lady against a check for 72 million euros (plus 10 bonus), Miralem Pjanic having gone the other way for 60 million euros (plus 5 bonus). Under Andrea Pirlo, Adrien Rabiot and his teammates currently occupy third place in their championship, eight points behind leaders AC Milan.
In the Champions League, they will have to work against FC Porto in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions League, after their first leg defeat (2-1). On the financial level, Juve warns, in its press release, that its 2020-2021 financial year should be “in deficit”.
