Rats run across the tracks. Waste flows in a trickle between the rails. And the tiles fall down from the walls. The New York subway is an impertinence. Not just because of the cleanliness. Trains get stuck in tunnels, stop operating in the middle of Brooklyn and, contrary to the timetable, do not go to Manhattan but to Queens. Commuters in the metropolis on the east coast need patience and a lot of time to get to their destination. This is probably one of the reasons why the number of annual metropolitan passengers has fallen in the past two years.
