Other educational trips lead to Venice or the Galapagos Islands. Daniel Hooper traveled last summer with his 16-year-old son Rory to the beech forests of the Chilterns, 60 kilometers northwest of London, where eco-activists want to prevent a huge construction project. The object lesson achieved the desired result: at the end of January, father and son sat down together in self-made tunnels in the middle of London to protest against the destruction of nature. And because Hooper Senior, 47, is much better known by his alias Swampy (“boggy”), the British eco-scene now has a dynastic hero: Swampy the Second.
