From March 20, a question will finally be answered that has been passionately discussed in the German Ice Hockey League since it started again shortly before Christmas 2020. Is the south really that much better than the north at ice hockey?
Ice Tigers: the redeeming 3-2 in pictures
It was close: the Nürnberg Ice Tigers almost set a negative record with a tenth defeat in a row. With the 3-2 win against Straubing, they instead set a sign of life that required 62 minutes of ice hockey – without extra time. The redeeming victory in pictures.

The DEL has been divided for 17 match days. In the south, the Adler Mannheim dominate, while the Nürnberg Ice Tigers are trying to keep up. Which is not easy when you are constantly against Munich, the ambitious one-year flights from Ingolstadt or, as on Wednesday (6.30 p.m. /MagentaSport), just have to play against Mannheim. In the north almost everyone seems to be able to defeat anyone. Currently in good shape: Düsseldorf. Chaotic since the beginning of the season: Krefeld.
Double double game days
But after a double double round, the business trips are longer again. The reunification will be celebrated on March 20 (5.30 p.m.) with what may be a future classic: Nuremberg versus Iserlohn. Then the Ice Tigers play against each of the seven northern teams twice, once at home and once away. The tables are still calculated separately from one another.
Because the time before the World Cup, which is only to take place in Latvia in May, and overnight stays are to be saved due to economic and epidemiological needs, the Ice Tigers have to compete twice within 24 hours . For example on March 25th and 26th in Cologne and Düsseldorf or just two days later against Bremerhaven and Berlin.
Playoffs from April 20th
The question of the balance of power will not be finally answered until April 20th. Then the playoffs start – with a quarter-finals within the groups. From the semi-finals it will be serious. At the moment, however, it doesn’t look like the Ice Tigers will be allowed to participate.
