Media center: Kodi 19 is compatible with tvOS, but is not in the App Store

Code, an open source multimedia player appreciated for its many add-ons, recently received a major update. Several areas are improved by Code 19 «Matrix», such as playing videos with support for AV1 codec, HLG HDR and HDR10 on Windows 10, and HDR10 and Dolby Vision on Android.

The interface has been revised, especially for music with changes for the display of metadata, playlists and the view for now playing. Kodi 19 is moving from the Python 2.7 language to Python 3, which means that add-ons need to be updated to work, which most of them should be.

Kodi 19 also marks compatibility with tvOS, but there is a downside: the application is not in the App Store. One of the developers of this version has already had the opportunity to justify this absence by the big extra work that would have to be done so that the application respects the many rules of Apple.

To install Kodi on Apple TV, you either need to sideload the application using Xcode, or a jailbroken Apple TV. Both methods are detailed on a wiki. This tvOS compatibility is accompanied by the abandonment of the 32-bit architecture for the iOS app (which is not in the App Store either), which means that at least an iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini 2 or iPod touch 6 for this new version.
