Refined grains associated with an increased risk of death?

Not all grains are good for you. A recent study points out that consuming refined grains in large quantities would increase the risk of early death.

We are used to hearing that cereals are good for your health. They are even consumed in the form of milk: oats, rice … But we must not confuse whole grains and refined grains. In other words, eating a bowl of industrial cereal does not have the same nutritional value at all as unmodified oats. A study, published in the British Medical Journal even explains that consuming refined grains in large quantities could endanger health.

This study covered a long period: 16 years, and on a large number of subjects, 137,130 people, in 21 different countries. By studying their consumption of grains (whole and refined), the researchers found that those who ate a lot of modified grains were 27% more likely to die early. The risk of stroke would even increase by 47%, just ahead of the risk of cardiovascular disease (+ 27%).

It’s all a question of quantity

Where can you find refined grains? Modified cereals are present in industrial doughs, pastries, pastries or even in white bread. This does not mean that you should stop consuming it at all. Note that the increased risk of death is only observed in the group of subjects whose consumption exceeded 350 grams per day.

The study also points out that the results may be influenced by other factors, especially the consumption of other foods unfavorable to cardiovascular health -sugar, fats- and which generally accompanies that of processed cereals.

To remember : this is an observational study, which as its name suggests “observes” (but does not provide formal proof) of a link between the consumption of large quantities of refined cereals and the cardiovascular risk and death. Other elements that can also increase these risks, in particular an overall unbalanced diet in people who consume these cereals in large quantities. Either way, this study supports the current discourse: prefer whole grains and consume refined ones in moderate quantities.
