A morning for the preservation of the coast

On the occasion of World Day, various actions take place throughout the month on the coast.

On Saturday, a waste collection operation mobilized around fifty people in the marshes between Port Maubert and Saint-Romain. This morning was organized by the Saintongeaise Association of Waterfowl Hunters (ASCGE) and the Coastal Conservatory, as part of World Wetlands Day. As a reminder, the Ramsar Treaty is an intergovernmental convention signed on February 2, 1971 for their conservation and sustainable use. Around ten actions are undertaken throughout the month on the coast, involving various players, including the Coastal Conservatory and the Environment Biosphere, present this morning alongside hunters and residents.

“This is a first for us, we are planning another operation, perhaps in June,” said Mickaël Couzinet, president of ASCGE. Many hunters, with families and children, responded. The collection is successful. A 30 cubic meter dumpster awaits the comings and goings of tractors loaded with waste collected between Mortagne-sur-Gironde and Port Maubert. Following an agreement, with management specifications, with the Coastal Conservatory, ASCGE manages 15 kilometers of coastline, the hunting area extending between the ports of Mortagne and Charron. “In June, we want to renew the operation from Port Maubert to Saint-Thomas-de-Conac, we could do it two to three times a year,” predicts the president. The Conservatory of Natural Areas of Nouvelle-Aquitaine manages land control of 1,600 hectares. “We take care of the management of hunting and agriculture (four breeders on less than 300 hectares of salt meadows). On this territory, half is granted to the 144 tonnes of hunting, the rest is in reserve ”, indicate Yann Turgis and Antoine Cassel for the Conservatory. They have other missions. The other part of their action is to carry out biological monitoring of fauna and flora, with partners such as Biosphere environment. They take care of the protection of habitats, such as reed beds, shelters for paludicultural birds. They also follow what restores the habitat for young fish from a former polder near Mortagne-sur-Gironde, or are interested in the preservation of vegetation. A common interest with hunters. Other actions continue until February 28. They can be viewed on the Biosphere Environment website.
