Never before has it been so warm on February 21 and the temperature will remain very pleasant for the time of year for the next few days. Due to the nice weather, however, more pollen from the hazel and alder is expected. Hay fever patients can therefore develop symptoms that resemble coronavirus symptoms.
The warm weather has to do with the exceptionally soft air that is supplied from Spain.
Because the heat may last for a week, Weerplaza expects nature to “come to life”. Grass will start to grow again and the sap flows from fruit trees and small shrubs will start quickly, which can lead to the formation of buds and even blossom in the short term.
For people with hay fever, the conditions are less pleasant, because the hazel and alder are now starting to release pollen. In addition, no more rain is expected after Thursday, which will only increase the concentration of pollen in the air.
The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) already warned during the previous pollen season against the fact that hay fever symptoms can resemble symptoms of COVID-19.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include a cold, cough, sore throat, and fever. Hay fever sufferers can suffer from ticklish cough, a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing fits.
The researchers recommend hay fever patients to be prepared for the start of the pollen season by, for example, starting on time with the hay fever medication, avoiding streets and forests with blooming birches and keeping the windows and doors closed as much as possible.
