Facebook removes page from Myanmar junta to incite violence | NOW

Facebook on Sunday removed the Facebook page of the Myanmar military junta because it incited violence.

The decision follows a fatal demonstration on Saturday. Police opened fire on protesters, who were there in protest at the coup the junta staged in early February. Two protesters were killed.

The junta, known locally as the Tatmadaw, had its own news page on Facebook called ‘Tatmadaw True News Information’. That page has now been removed, Facebook says.

Earlier this week, the military junta blocked access to Wikipedia in the country. Access to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp had been blocked for some time. According to monitoring organization Netblocks Internet connections have been temporarily switched off every evening after 6 pm for a week.

In Myanmar, protests have been going on for two weeks against the coup. Among other things, the protesters are demanding that democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi be released.
