Motorcycle noise repeatedly causes conflicts in Baden-Württemberg. For this reason, the state had noise measuring devices installed last summer. The results have now been analyzed.
The country’s motorcycle noise measurements have shown that motorcycles are significantly louder than the rest of the traffic. As an example for the state’s noise measurements, the data on the B39 near Löwenstein (Heilbronn district) on Saturday, July 11, 2020 was evaluated.
Every third motorcycle louder than 90 decibels
At measuring point B39 near Löwenstein, around every second motorcycle was traveling with 87 decibels or louder, and every third motorcycle was even louder than 90 decibels. In the case of cars, only one in eight and one in 30 vehicles achieved these measured values. A comparable picture emerged on three other road sections that were measured.
The noise level on the streets in Baden-Württemberg is measured with so-called delineator post measuring devices. These record the speed of passing cars and motorcycles. The data from the municipalities’ motorcycle noise displays subsidized by the state were also used to analyze the noise levels.
Noise protection officer: “As loud as a jackhammer”
Most motorcycles are as loud as a chainsaw or jackhammer, according to the state government’s noise protection officer, Thomas Marwein, with regard to the data. He calls for motorcycles to be quieter and has high hopes for electric motorcycles.
The Baden-Wuerttemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) sees the federal government as having an obligation to tackle motorcycle noise. Hermann demands that the real measurable noise of motorcycles becomes a decisive criterion for traffic approval.

The conflict over motorcycle noise never ends
While politics is calling for stricter measures to reduce motorcycle noise, bikers in the country feel deprived of their freedom. The state and municipalities founded the Motorcycle Noise Initiative in 2019 to jointly face the problem. In addition, the federal states called for motorcycle driving bans on Sundays and public holidays last year. As a result, there were several protests by motorcycle fans in Baden-Württemberg, including in Freiburg.
