Kozhikode: One of the earliest women football players in Kerala, Fauzia Mampetta has passed away.
He was the coach of the football team of Kozhikode Nadakkavu School. Fauzia was a girl who came to the football field at a time when girls were reluctant to even go to school to study.
She was the goalkeeper of Kerala in the National Games women’s football. Fauzia defended Kerala’s goal in the All India Women’s Junior Championship held in Kolkata.
Although Kerala lost the final 1-0, Fauzia’s rescue efforts under the goal post were well received.
Nadakavu came into sports while studying in school. The beginning was in handball. Later it was modified in many sports. Fauzia was a state champion in weightlifting, third in South India in powerlifting, a member of the state team in handball, bronze at the state level in judo, and a district team member in hockey and volleyball.
In 2003, the same year he took over as the football team coach at Kozhikode Nadakkavu School, Fauzia gave four players from the district to the Kerala team. She also coached the runner – up Kozhikode team in the state sub – junior and junior tournaments from 2005 to 2007.
He was the coach of the team when Kerala finished third in the National Senior Championship held in Manipur in 2005. Fauzia was also the assistant coach of Kerala, the runners-up in the 2006 National Senior Championship in Odisha.
