In an interview with Nord Éclair, Vline Buggy, the lyricist of Claude François, revealed that she was at the origin of the costumes of Les Clodettes.
Claude François remains an icon for many French people. The artist has marked the world of music with his eponymous titles like That year, Alexandria Alexandra and many others. And when we think of Claude François, we inevitably think of Clodettes … These sexy young women who danced behind the artist. Between 1966 and 1978, it would be more than thirty Clodettes who surrounded the singer. In recent times, they wore colorful satin shirts and shorts … It was Vline Buggy, lyricist by Claude François, Hugues Aufray, and Michel Sardou, who designed some of the costumes.
In the columns of North Lightning, she confides on this subject: “I went to meet Claude at his hotel on tour and I told him: “By dint of seeing your Clodettes still naked, we end up not seeing them anymore. For a new song, why don’t you try something else? “. The singer is intrigued by Vline Buggy’s questions and asks to see his drawings. “They were shorts like I wore when I was 20. I suggested to her that each Clodette wear a different color,” she explains. And obviously, the singer followed his advice!
The birth of the Clodettes
In an interview with 20minutes, Julie Calvet, who was one of the emblematic Clodettes, had revealed how Claude François had the idea of surrounding himself with pretty women on stage. And the inspiration of Johnny Hallyday’s rival came from across the Atlantic when he discovered Ike and Tina Turner. “He was showing us footsteps inspired by a cult show in the United States. With Peggy (Nguyen-thi), he showed us tapes and asked us to identify the movements that made you feel good”, she had confided. A successful bet for the artist who established himself with his Clodettes as one of the leading artists of a whole generation before his untimely death in 1978.
