US revives Quad alliance, China warns

The USA officially relaunched discussions with three Asian countries within the framework of the so-called Quad alliance.

It was in 2007 that the unofficial alliance called Quad was created between the USA, Japan,Australia and India. Shinzo Abe, then Prime Minister of Japan, strongly encouraged the formation of this alliance in order to counterbalance the influence of China in the region. In November 2019, the Quad countries jointly conducted several naval maneuvers in the Bay of Bengal.

More than ten years later, the new US presidency officially revived discussions between countries. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently announced that he would meet with representatives from India, Australia and Japan. The man said in this regard « these discussions with the Quad Foreign Ministers are essential to advance our common goals of a free and open Indo-Pacific region and to meet the challenges of our time ”.

The Chinese political power reacted immediately by warning the American president that relaunching the Quad alliance would be “a serious strategic blunder” and that he risked “a serious strategic confrontation” with Beijing.
