Mikaela Shiffrin once again underlined her top form in Cortina after she had already won bronze in the Super-G and gold in the combination in the Dolomites. In the first run, the 25-year-old was two hundredths faster than her surprising US compatriot Nina O’Brien, who pushed up to second place with starting number 19.
The deficit of the Super-G world champion Lara Gut-Behrami, who was second on the podium in Kronplatz in the last giant slalom before the World Cup, is also only eight hundredths. Michelle Gisin follows behind the Austrian Katharina Liensberger. The Engelberger lost just 0.34 seconds on Shiffrin. A total of nine riders classified themselves at the top within one second.
Behind the Slovak Petra Vlhova (11th) follows the Schwyzerin Wendy Holdener 1.25 seconds behind in 13th place. Downhill world champion Corinne Suter (2.04 back) took 18th place after 32 riders.
It was a bitter disappointment for hosts Italy in the first run. Marta Bassino, the giant slalom dominator from Italy, who won gold in the parallel race two days earlier, is only in 15th place after half the workload.
