NovPower embarked on the design of electric motors in 2018.
« Electric motorization is the future of aviation. From the first lines of its website, NovPower is clear. Since 2018, the Saint-Genis-Pouilly company has started manufacturing electric propulsion systems for aeronautics. ” The idea is not new, explains Bernard Riou, the founder of NovPower. From the beginnings of aviation, we had thought of electric. But back then, the technology was not as advanced as it is now, and heat engines were far superior in performance. Since the first flight in 1903, it has therefore taken more than a century to see the electric come back to the fore.
More economical, more ecological and less noisy, it must be said that this mode of transport is not lacking in advantages. ” There are no wearing parts with this propulsion system, so there is bound to be less maintenance. », Specifies Bernard Riou. More than a maintenance cost, it is above all the costs linked to consumption that are drastically lower. On average, a jet fueled with kerosene costs € 20-30 per flight hour. Electric, for the same flight time, the cost of recharging is 2 to 5 €. Pilot in Annecy, Bernard Riou explains the other advantages linked to his technology: “ There is obviously a positive impact on the environment, but above all noise pollution is greatly reduced. Electricity can calm relations with residents who are often in conflict with aerodromes. You should know that some structures are closing because of this! »
