Almost. Vienna world trips 1873/2020
Almost Paris, almost New York City, almost Hong Kong New Territories – the fence around the Wien Museum Karlsplatz invites you to take an imaginary trip around the world. In the first Corona lockdown, the Viennese architecture journalist and city lover Wojciech Czaja got on his Vespa and began to explore his hometown with new eyes. Instead of traveling the world, he discovered the world in Vienna. So far he has published almost 500 photos on Facebook, some of which can also be seen on his Instagram account @philopolist, in his book “Almost. 100 Cities in Vienna ”, the hundred best snapshots are gathered in the form of a visual story book.
150 years earlier it was still unaffordable for most people to explore the world themselves. The world exhibition in the Prater, however, offered the opportunity to undertake a “small trip around the world” with the help of 200 mostly temporary buildings. The Vienna Photographers Association offered souvenir photos – a new mass medium at the time, hundreds of copies of which can be found in the collection of the Wien Museum
The Wien Museum combines two photo series on Karlsplatz at the site fence that can be assigned to the genre of “imaginary journeys”. In their dialogue, spaces of thought open up that include questions about authenticity and similarity, about image formation and cliché, about memory and imagination. “Almost” is a journey around the world and a journey through time along the fence at Karlsplatz.
