He won Red Moon! During the weekend (Saturday 20 February) we will finally return to racing and the missing races of the Final of Prada Cup. Let’s summarize the previous episodes. The commercial organizers of the event, named ACE, were working with the New Zealand government to change the rules of the competition. L’article A2.3 (b) of the Appendix to the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing America’s Cup is clear: if the Final will not end on February 24th with the disputes of all the scheduled regattas, then the fleet will win and at that moment will have the advantage. The problem is that ACE even intended to resume the competition on February 26, then postponing the start of the America’s Cup from March 6 to 13.. Reason? Wait for the lockdown alert level to change from 2 to 1, thus allowing the public to watch the competition.
Red Moon, Challenger of Record of the America’s Cup, has firmly opposed a hypothesis of this type. Through a rough press release the Italian consortium stated that there is no reason not to compete: for months a protocol has been drawn up that allows you to race in conditions of absolute safety even with an alert 2, although without the presence of spectators. It is clear that this involves serious economic losses for the organizers: and here, as you can guess, lies the whole heart of the story.
With the law on its side, Luna Rossa could only win. In the early New Zealand morning a press release was in fact disclosed with which ACE, in fact, raised the white flag, not exempting from trimming the now canonical accusations and offenses against the Prada Pirelli team. The words of Tina Symmans are eloquent and not very elegant, presidente dell’America’s Cup Events: “It is a very disappointing situation. It is my responsibility to do my best to run the event with the best interests of the public and all interested parties. Symmans then continued: “Since Sunday we have been working very hard to give the Challenger of Record (Luna Rossa, ed) the chance to show some honor and respect towards this country (New Zealand, ed) and to delay the Prada Cup until we have had the opportunity to return to alert level 1 and therefore everyone could benefit and have fun (referring to the public, ed)“,
Then a very hard attack, yet another, against Patrizio Bertelli, the owner of Luna Rossa: “Clearly they have forgotten the words of their leader Patrizio Bertelli, who in the opening press conference had talked about how privileged we were all to compete in Auckland without particular Covid restrictions and that therefore they would have put commitment and responsibility so that the Prada Cup was a great sporting event . This appeal fell on deaf ears and it is clear that for Luna Rossa the only goal is to win the Prada Cup rather than do the good of a country that has worked so hard to stage this event.“.
At this point the racing will resume with the following restrictions. Race courses B and C will not be used to avoid gatherings of people ashore. There will be no public viewing opportunities such as docking shows. A maximum of 100 people will be allowed in the village, who must wear a mask: the minimum recommended distance is two meters. All bars, cafes and restaurants can remain open in compliance with New Zealand legislation which provides for alert level 2. We recall that in New Zealand, currently, there are just 3 cases of positive Covid positive in the whole nation...
In short, summing up, the organizers could not help but bow to Luna Rossa. They asked for a change of regulation, without getting it. However “The law is hard, but the law“, The ancient Romans said. If a law exists, it must be respected, not modified arbitrarily and according to one’s own economic interests. Red Moon she is basically portrayed as a heartless, ruthless Devil, but has done nothing but cling to the rules. A possible lawsuit would have led to a foregone Challenger of Record victory, hence ACE’s decision to literally put its tail between its legs. A not insignificant political success for the Prada Team Pirelli, which at the same time has now become a scorched earth around it. Let’s expect a ruthless war in the coming weeks from the New Zealanders.
