Darmstadt – The initial reception facility for refugees in a former barracks in Darmstadt will be reactivated in March due to the corona pandemic. In order to give refugees and employees the best possible protection against the virus, but also sufficient rooms for quarantine, new locations would be added to the current initial reception facilities. This was announced by the responsible regional council in Gießen on Wednesday. Refugees had already lived in the Starkenburg barracks from August 2015 to the end of September 2018. The premises are currently being prepared.
According to the regional council, the first 150 to 200 people will be accommodated here at the beginning of March. Because of the pandemic, a maximum occupancy of up to 400 people currently seems realistic. Around 3900 people are currently living at various locations in the country’s initial reception facility.
