Epic Games, the creator of the popular shooting game Fortnite, has filed an official complaint against Apple with the European Commission. The company has been in conflict with Apple since last year, because the game developer has added its own payment system to its iPhone app. That goes against Apple’s rules, after which the Epic Games apps were removed from the App Store.
Epic accuses Apple of abusing its position of power because the US tech giant demands that app makers use Apple’s payment system and hand over 30 percent of all proceeds.
Previously, Epic Games has already filed complaints against Apple in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
It’s not entirely clear why Epic Games is targeting Apple. For game consoles, the company pays up to 30 percent of the proceeds to the owner of the platform. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney stated last year that this situation cannot be compared to that of the iPhone apps.
More companies are criticizing Apple’s method
At the same time, Epic isn’t the only company protesting Apple’s practices. Music streaming service Spotify, for example, has often spoken out against the benefits that Apple’s own music service Apple Music enjoys according to the Swedes.
In addition, Facebook believes that Apple is consciously trying to affect the social media company’s earnings model with privacy measures.
The European Union is also looking to Apple because of Apple Pay and the company’s refusal to open up the NFC chip in its cell phone to other companies looking to provide payment services. According to the group, this has to do with safety.
