The fundraising objective this year is 700,000 euros, to profit medical innovation against cancer. This edition will focus on Artificial intelligence which helps in the development of new treatments.

Cancer and big data, what relationship?

For 2021, the sums paid will go to artificial intelligence against cancer. “Data saves lives” explains Xosé Fernandez, data director at Institut Curie, because the more big data we have, the more we know and the more we can find suitable treatments. In oncology, the technique requires millions of anonymized data, it is a precious aid for the medical diagnosis but also for the therapeutic decision. These data also offer the possibility of a progressive follow-up of the patient… which will make it possible to treat him more effectively while limiting the side effects. From medical records to imaging – MRI, scanners – from blood markers to genomic data, real life data provided by the patient himself via the mycuria app, this whole set of aggregated information helps medical teams who work in close collaboration with digital specialists.

What was the money raised in previous years used for?

In 2020, despite the Covid-19, the outpouring of generosity made it possible to collect 533 000 euros. The sum was used to support precision medicine. Personalized, this supplements the existing classical therapeutic arsenal (chemotherapy, radiotherapy) and its objective is to offer the patient a treatment adapted to the characteristics of his tumor, via two types of treatment: targeted therapies and immunotherapy.

In 2019, 630,000 euros were used to support fundamental research, essential to the emergence of new treatment strategies, medical innovations, in order to better understand and fight the disease. The final objective is to develop specific therapies.
