(New York) Tempted by the race for the White House, Democratic Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio on Monday approved a set of “green” laws supposed to be exemplary for the climate.

This series of measures, which is the New York version of the “Green New Deal” advocated by young democratic stars at the national level, notably requires skyscrapers and buildings over 2300 m2 reduce their emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to their 2005 level.

Otherwise, owners will be subject to heavy fines, which could exceed $ 1 million for the most important buildings, said Bill de Blasio.

The construction of glass-fronted buildings, which appeared in the 1960s and appreciated for their panoramic views, will now only be authorized if they meet very strict energy criteria.

“With each passing day, our planet is getting closer to a point of no return. The New York Green New Deal takes the bull by the horns, ”said Mr. de Blasio after having endorsed this set adopted Thursday by his city council.

The mayor has presented in recent weeks several New York initiatives in line with the wishes of the most left-wing Democratic presidential candidates, including a health coverage system for all New Yorkers.

For several weeks, Mr. de Blasio has said he plans to embark on the battle for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential election, where 19 candidates are already crowding while awaiting the probable candidacy this week of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Recent polls give it very little chance, however.

Asked Monday on the morning show Morning Joe, Mr. de Blasio assured that he would make a decision “soon”, and that his family would be “the most important factor”.
