President Lenín Moreno wrote on his Twitter account that “Ecuador is in mourning. Starting tomorrow (Wednesday) I will declare a national mourning in memory of Gustavo Noboa, former president of the Republic. Beloved friend, respected democrat, youth moral builder, patriot. My condolences to his family and friends.

Noboa is remembered for his good character and kindness, but also for his firmness of convictions, which were transmitted to dozens of generations from his capacity as a secondary and university professor.

Noboa assumed power in January 2000, after a popular uprising ended the term of President Jamil Mahuad, in the midst of a deep economic crisis that forced the country to adopt the United States dollar as its national currency. At the time, Ecuador was on the verge of hyperinflation and half of the 42 banks at the time had failed or closed.

As soon as he became president, he ratified the currency exchange and faced the serious consequences of the El Niño phenomenon, especially on the Ecuadorian coast, and shortly afterwards he achieved the renegotiation of the foreign debt, which later led to a driven process. by his political rivals, who accused him of embezzlement. This caused him to asylum in Costa Rica between 2003 and 2005.

Many attribute to him having managed to give tranquility and stability to the country in the midst of a time marked by political upheaval. He handed over to power President Lucio Gutiérrez.

He was married to María Isabel Baquerizo, with whom he had six children.

Former Vice President Alberto Dahik, on his Twitter account, assured that “an honorable, responsible president who successfully led the country through very tough times died. A youth trainer like no other … loved his homeland very much. He always said: God’s times are perfect. “
