CLIPS OF THE MONTH – February # 1

Twice a month, the editorial staff offers you a selection of ten clips that made the music news. For this first selection of February, tender kisses with Pi Ja Ma, a gore trip with slowthai and a sad slow with Refuge.

Pi Ja Ma – Kiss par Hugo Pillard

Without a safe distance and with a lot of love, Pi Ja Ma unveils the whimsical music video of Kiss. If we had already heard the first song in French of the singer on the occasion of her winter session for the blog library, this time it’s the studio version that is offered to us two days before Valentine’s Day. In the sweet video directed by Hugo Pillard, the musician, also an illustrator, entangles the two strings of her bow and delivers a clip as kitsch as it is tender. Red and pink hearts in paper, light garlands and pompom girl of love on the program of this marshmallow-flavored serenade. Always armed with her childish and colorful paw, Pauline De Tarragon wakes up sleeping hearts and invites us to her sentimental party where confetti and joy rain in gusto. Difficult to resist the invitation.

Yen Yen – WRUNG par Anthelme Dubois

In one and the same sequence shot Anthelme Dubois immerses us in an atmosphere à la Wong Kar-Wai. For the title Wrung, Yen Yen employs sinuous but assertive musical paths by mixing the complexity of his feelings. The clip opens and closes on a close-up of the singer, unfolding in the meantime on the dark setting of a karaoke restaurant bathed in neon light. An intoxicating and liberating piece which gives us a glimpse of the artist’s first EP, Goodbye – repeated many times in this song – which will be released on March 31st. Patience.

Therese – Chinese? by Choblan

« Chinese, Chun Li Massage, Polie Soumise au lit You call me Katsuni Chinese, Money Tiger woman, Gucci Lucy Liu, Gong Li (…) Chintok, Grain d’riz Manga, tobacco bar Jacky Chan, Bruce lee “. This Friday, February 12, Chinese New Year’s Day, the singer Thérèse has finally released the long-awaited clip of her new title Chinese? co-composed by producer Adam Carpels. The post-it notes of Asian clichés are piling up on Thérèse’s face. She has fun with it in a pop and tangy staging to reclaim her identity without victimization. Visually everything is positive, sublimated, stylized almost to excess from the costumes to the sets. Perfectly paced, the editing and the images accompany the lyrics with humor. A laugh motivated by the presence of a rather particular actor. A small dog whose green eyes light up like Superman’s kryptonite, hypnotizing the extras. Rare are the clips whose universe also fits perfectly to a song where creative inventiveness leads the dance. A more than successful bet for Thérèse and her team. Well done !

Niteroy – Stop Thinking par Victor Hanotel

It is an immersion in a waking dream that Niteroy gives us this time to see, a few months later Loves Nostalgia. “Stop thinking”. Clip with a hyper sunny aesthetic sometimes bordering on kitsch, Stop Thinking bathes us in a warm and dreamlike light. A fish, a rose, postcard landscapes, and the water that drowns everything in a final vision. The artist’s Lo-fi pop borrows once again the codes of a generous bossa nova, between round synths and melodious voices. To listen to again and again while waiting for the first rays of summer.

Bxam – Short Wave by Romanne Brunet & Louaï Ben Adda

The young Dj Bxam, member of the Parisian collective Hanabi, is back with a new single Ronesque Short Wave. This aerial piece, yet far from its first clip Departure produced under an A380, is accompanied by an animated clip presenting the journey of a young artist to fame and what it can engender. The Nancéien makes us discover his new obsession for the “ALISS” antennas, which we see in the clip, which allow the diffusion of music throughout the world in a few seconds. Inspired by this immense structure, we discover the Dj’s ambition to become global and the importance of radios and streaming platforms without which it would be difficult to shine. This electro track mixing ambient and atmospheric techno flirts with film music and can only remind us of certain Hans Zimmer masterpieces. The surprising ending of the anime brings us back to earth, reminding us of the craziness that fame can sometimes engender.

Dry Cleaning – Strong Feelings on Saturday Visconti

Pixels and flash images at the rendezvous on the new title of the London post-punk art-rock quartet Dry Cleaning. Directed by Tom Dowse, this clip shows constructions and works which parade with roads, trucks, tractors and other machines, animated in Glitch Art by Sabato Visconti. Squares black and white or very pop and saturated, this decor is messy and blurry. Singer Florence Shaw anchors her nebulous speech, carried by a strong and dark bass line and sublime guitar chords. With Strong Feelings, the group therefore re-enchants this month of February. A title to find on their first long format New Long Leg, scheduled for next April.

Special Friend – Pastel by Erica Ashleson

The Franco-American duo Special Friend delivers a new single and music video with Pastel, directed by Erica, singer and drummer of the group. The aesthetic is simple, refined, giving the film a tone that has evaporated over time. A visual work in accordance with its main character, that of a neglected ghost, erased, that we follow here and there. The group’s energetic indie pop rounds it off, accompanying this clip with its slightly humorous and definitely light tone. One more step before the release of their first and promising album, Common Enemy scheduled for March 26th.

slowthai, Skepta – CANCELLED by THE REST

Northampton Rapper Slowthai Introduces Bloody New Single CANCELLED accompanied by the king of grime Skepta. The clip takes us on an avalanche of horrific and wacky cult references as it opens with a scene reminding us of the beginning of the film Scream. Then the two rappers delight us with their adaptation of the hilarious Budweiser pub and his “Whassup!” “Transformed here into” Wagwaaan! “, From the Jamaican slang which translates as” What’s going on? “. Whether it’s slowthai dressed as Freddy or Skepta disguised as Candyman, then performing the dismal dance of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, we can’t help but be wowed by the intoxicating and magnetic production of the track. If the clip is full of visual references, let’s not forget the mythical scene ofAmerican Psycho or Us, the lyrics also stick to it. From Fugees to Jodorowsky, including Harry Potter, it’s a real treasure hunt with tributes and cultural references. A successful and jubilant pastiche.

Wife – The garden by La Femme

After four first teaser titles, the French group La Femme continues to unveil a little more of its new elixir, Paradigms, which will see the light of day in full at the beginning of April. Here, a divine dive into an exotic landscape planted with synthetic, pop and hypnotic music The garden. A production by Talal Kurdali, in which nymphs celebrate in Spanish sinister words “No Expect nothing from life / Because life is a whore that you pay with your body » (Don’t expect anything from life / Because life is a whore that you pay with your body).

Refuge – Lava (feat Pi Ja Ma) by Florian Salabert

“I have a crater in my heart”, this is the feeling that the reissue of Lava in French from the Prince of Darkness Refuge on first listen. Already appeared on his first record Hunger released last year, it offers us a poignant reissue in a duet with Pi ja Ma. A story of love and emotional eruption put into images by Florian Salabert where the tandem offers a sad slow in the dark. The ashy words resonate even louder in French and liquefy our melancholy souls. If death and darkness roam in ghosts on the title, it is a feeling of life and freedom that unfolds over this ritornello. A declaration of love with the scent of eternity which leaves a tender and deep nostalgia on our ears.
