Next joke: Kyrgios imitates Djokovic’s cheers

The taunts between Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open don’t want to stop. Now the Australian is imitating the Serb’s cheers.

14.02.2021

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic, episode 732. With his buddy Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Australian provokes doubles and imitates the Serbian cheers – notably in the empty stadium. Then he says clearly what he thinks of Djokovic.

Nick Kyrgios manages to get under the skin of his archenemy even without a spectator: Before appearing in doubles with his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis, he imitates the gesture with which Djokovic cheers after a victory. He sends hearts towards the (in this case not present) audience. Kyrgios, who failed in the singles on Friday against Dominic Thiem, had repeatedly made fun of the Serb’s jubilation in the past. At the Australian Open, the two of them regularly teased each other again at the press conferences.

Before the tournament there was still a bit of radio silence between the two fighters. But shortly before the start of the tournament, the Serbian Craig Tiley (head of the Australian Open tournament) asked for better conditions for the players in the Melbourne bubble. This got Kyrgios, who was at the forefront of fighting the pandemic in his home country – he even delivered aid packages – into the wrong throat. Especially since the world number 1 apparently did not always stick to the protocol and was also photographed without a mask.

For his part, the defending champion said at a press conference that he had little respect for the Australian outside the field. Kyrgio’s reply: “Novak is a strange guy.” He could hardly be told about a guy who was partying with a bare chest in a pandemic (Djokovic on his Adria tour, editor’s note). In terms of talent, Djokovic (and Nadal) are also not in the same league as Roger Federer in terms of talent – for him the Swiss is clearly the best player of all time.

That’s why Kyrgios likes to target Djokovic

His good friend Kokkinakis also publicly teased after Djokovic’s game against Taylor Fritz. The 17-time Grand Slam winner took several medical time-outs against the American because of an abdominal muscle injury and struggled to a five-set victory. After the game, Djokovic was skeptical about being able to face Milos Raonic in the round of 16.

«Heal a muscle tear in two days ?! Teach me that, ”Kokkinakis’ sneered ironically on Twitter. In fact, Djokovic recovered surprisingly quickly and was back on the field. Such stories increase the criticism’s allegations towards the 33-year-old that he sometimes acts as a hypochondriac and that medical time-outs are often just a tactical tool.

Kyrgios commented on his Djokovic jubilation with smug and ironic undertones: “I just felt love. I was just trying to create a good party vibe. Everyone loves this cheer. He is very popular. ” In addition, the tennis bad boy explained that his actions and words should not always be taken seriously because he just wants to have fun. Why the world number 47 always targets Djokovic is simple: “I don’t like him at all, so it’s fun.” Tennis fans can look forward to more episodes.
